A Letter Explaining The Disparity Of Fear
The following is a letter sent earlier today, in which I respond to a reader's request that I explain the position on wealth and security disparity I expressed in an earlier article.
First off, I'm glad you enjoyed the piece. Writing, as Hemingway noted, is lonely work, which can feel like talking to the wall until someone comes up to you and says, "Hey, nice job."
Now, as to your question, or the implied question, you yourself have helped me in answering it.
As I'm sure you're aware, Mearsheimer has pushed forth a theory of foreign relations that he calls "offensive realism," in which nations look to gain as much power as possible over their regional neighbors in order to attain a feeling of security. America, for example, has maintained her hegemony over the Americas in order to reach the level of military and economic security she has at present. Before that, America raced westward in an attempt to beat out the Europeans, the Mexicans and the Native American tribes.
It happened with the Soviet Union through much of the 20th century. It's happening with China and Israel now. The present-day watchword seems to be domination -- the slogan, "dominate, or be dominated."
